This very special fermenting event involves a skills workshop and 2 course lunch with fermentation revivalist and 'Ferment for Good' published author Sharon Flynn of The Fermentary.

This is a perfect way to spend a winter Sunday - and its also a great blend of skills. Join Sharon Flynn the avid and experienced fermenter and author of Ferment for Good and Natasha Morgan sharing her love of all things edible, preserved and beautiful.

We will delve into Koji, Japan's national fungus, and all it's incredible uses.  Sharon will show you different types of koji rice and how miso is made, what you can ferment with it and how to use it in cooking, including ama-zake as a sweetener.  Make your own batch of miso and take a jar to ferment at home.

After a gorgeous 2 course kitchen garden lunch of the best local and Oak and Monkey Puzzle just-picked produce, and of course chock full of fermented goodness, we will wander the stunning Oak and Monkey Puzzle productive garden.

Sharon will be joined by Natasha, and we will then peel persimmons to turn into gorgeous dried and preserved 'hoshigaki' - a beautiful thing to adorn your window all winter.  We will put up a jar of persimmon vinegar as well.

You will you go home with miso, a string of persimmons and a jar of them ready to turn into the most gorgeous vinegar.  Bring a 2l jar or buy one of ours. We'll provide the 1L jar for your miso.

Numbers are limited so get in quick.

Sharon's first book Ferment for Good (Hardie Grant), will be available for purchase on the day.

About Sharon Flynn:

Sharon from The Fermentary is a passionate fermentation revivalist who will send you home with lots of knowledge and that you can easily try out at home.

Sharon had several periods in her life that influenced what would become her passion and business, but she wasn’t aware at the time. The first experience she remembers having an impact on her interest in fermented foods was making sour dough in Seattle. Her dedication to fermented foods really kicked off when her daughter became ill and she researched good bacteria and their influence in building resistances and immunities. When friends and family started asking for her products and insisting on paying for it, this led her on The Fermentary path, and it’s grown since then to be one of the best places to buy sauerkraut and other amazing products.

About Oak & Monkey Puzzle:

Oak and Monkey Puzzle is the design, event and horticultural production-focussed property of Natasha Morgan and her young children. It is also the physical manifestation of a dream held by a family from the city that made a tree change with a purpose in 2014. It is an evolving hub for landscape architecture, garden design, artisans and craftspeople by way of workshops, collaboration and bespoke events.

This workshop requires no previous knowledge and is set in a relaxed and informal environment where participants can ask questions, chat and enjoy all that is Oak and Monkey Puzzle with respected fermenter and author, Sharon Flynn.

Oak and Monkey Puzzle workshops include fresh baked morning tea, snacks and 2 course kitchen garden lunch picked fresh from the estate kitchen garden and local seasonal produce.

Class sizes are strictly limited to ensure these are intimate affairs.
